New Quilt: Rosslyn Tartan

My newest quilt, Rosslyn Tartan, made its debut at Vermont Quilt Festival in June.

It is the first full size, whole cloth quilt I’ve made, and it did very well in competition. The top is washed red silk with a bright fuchsia silk back. The silk really shows off the quilting which, as you know, is my favorite part of quilt making. I did heavy quilting with Aurifil cotton 50 weight thread in three shades of red. The designs were chosen to highlight the stone carvings in Rosslyn Chapel near Edinburgh, Scotland. The bottom three rows are the stars, roses, and lilies carved in the ceiling. The large center medallion is outlined in diamond shapes from the walls. There are thistles based on my own photographs taken in the Edinburgh Castle Garden. Two narrow sashings are of the crown of thorns design from the chapel columns. My signature “Pat tracks” quilting design and pumpkin seed stitch are the basic background fillers.

I was pleased to receive a purple ribbon of excellence which means 98 out of 100 points in the unique grading system of VQF. I also received the special award, Best Machine Quilting, one of the show’s major prizes.
This quilt and another of mine, Modern Reflections, will be included in the silk exhibit at New England Quilt Museum beginning May 1.

Join me on May 11, 2022 for the opening reception and lecture.
